Alison Riske is an American professional tennis player, known for an aggressive brand of stroke-making, who first rose to prominence after winning her first WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour title at the Tianjin Open in 2014. Her breakthrough, though, came in 2019 when she stormed into the top 20 of the singles rankings after beating 4 top-10 ranked players in the calendar year. Alison made her first Grand Slam quarter-final appearance that year after defeating the then World No.1 Ashleigh Barty in the 4th round of the Wimbledon championship. She had also reached the semi-final stage in the women’s doubles events at the 2019 Australian Open.

Alison attended the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School and Peters Township High School. She led the girl’s tennis team of the latter school to the Pennsylvania State Championship in 2006 and also triumphed at the singles championships.
After her high school graduation, she had signed a ‘letter of intent’, in 2009, to play college tennis for the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. However, she gave up on the scholarship as she decided to turn professional that year.

Alison Riske Facts
- In 2007, Alison won the USTA (United States Tennis Association) National Collegiate Clay Court Championship and consequently earned a place in the qualifying draw for that year’s US Open.
- The same year, she also won the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Summer Claycourt Championship and stood 2nd at the USTA National Hardcourts.
- At the start of 2009, she was ranked 895 in the official singles rankings and by the time she received a wild card entry into the qualifying round of the year’s US Open, her ranking had improved by more than 500 places and she had reached the 344th position. At the end of the year, she was ranked 232.
- When she lost the final of the Shenzhen Open, China in January 2019, it was her 6th successive defeat in a WTA singles tournament final after her maiden WTA triumph at the Tianjin Open, China in October 2014.
- She broke the finals jinx by winning the title at the Rosmalen Championships, Netherlands in June 2019. The win also helped her break back into the top 50 of the singles rankings for the first time since September 2017.
