Smooky MarGielaa Facts
- He started touring at the age of 7 with his father, who sung and performed on guitar, balafon, and djembe across the United States and Europe.
- Smooky grew up in the West 69th Street & Merriam Ave neighborhood of The Bronx, close to High Bridge.
- One of his cousins, who ended up in prison, was named Smoke and nicknamed Smook. He used it as the inspiration for the “Smooky” part of his name when he created his Facebook account. He added “MarGielaa” after one of the songs he recorded unofficially, titled Margielas after sneakers of the same name.
- As a kid, Smooky used to dance and sing covers of Michael Jackson songs at West African cultural events. He stated that if it weren’t for that, he would probably never have picked up singing or rapping.
- Growing up, he played a lot of basketball and listened to Speaker Knockerz and Chief Keef.
- At the age of 8, he asked his dad to help him record his 1st song which he played on balafon and drums.
- Smooky recorded his 1st hip hop song at the age of 11 or 12 when he got an iPhone. He recorded a beat by playing it on YouTube, adding an instrumental, and then rapping on it.
- His school tutor found a recording studio after he heard songs recorded on his phone and they went and recorded 2 songs. After he uploaded them to SoundCloud and Facebook, one of them went viral, and his tutor became his manager.
- He met ASAP Rocky at one of his 1st shows when he was 13 years old. Rocky watched him perform, they exchanged numbers and started collaborating.
- Smooky has also collaborated with ASAP Ferg, ASAP Twelvyy, ASAP Ant, Playboi Carti, CashMoneyAP, Juicy J, Chris Brown, and Hoodrich Pablo Juan.
- He started listening to the hip hop group Migos (Takeoff, Offset, and Quavo) in mid-2016 and has developed a strong desire to collaborate with them.
- Smooky founded a record label G.R.A.P.E. Records, which stands for Get Rich And Pray Everyday. Other members are Jelly Man, his manager, Mr. Show, and a fellow rapper, Drew Drippy.
- He supports American artists borrowing elements of the West African culture, such as genre Afrobeats, and liked what French Montana did with it.
- Smooky often makes a reference track with no words and then mumbles to see what flows before writing the lyrics.
- He described his fashion style as “a lot of swag” inspired by the 1990s. He likes to wear high-top sneakers, Puma Clydes, Suedes, and baggy clothes.
